Science Fiction. A boy is really good at a pilot simulation game, ends up scouted to participate in a tournament, also I think there was something about a missing sister. Read early 2010's. Spoilers.

He gets telekinetic powers and ends up in a personal contest pushing a ball back and forth, they end up melting the ball, one of the stages in the tournament features sharks in the ocean and I believe some kids died.

Ender's game by Orson Scott Card, it's been a while since I've read this one, but seem to remember a scene with a ball or something. And I do remember that he has a sister and a brother.

Ender doesn't have telekinetic powers though and while he's separated from his sister Valentine, she hasn't gone missing. (Ender goes away to school, Valentine stays home with her parents and other brother.)
