I miss his gentle warmth. His kindness. His virtue most of all. We so need his like right now.

J.F. Williams | 371 comments What most impressed me about Carter was his courage. He often engaged in battles he couldn't win but he went there anyway. Maya Angelou said something to the effect that courage is the most important virtue because without it you can't practice any of the others consistently. We need more courage nowadays.

message 11: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1088 comments Agreed, J.F. and Tom. Carter wasn't perfect, but a very long, long step up from what were slugging it out in this most recent election. And I was just reading a book "Confronting the Bomb" on the history of people's movements against the developments, from 1945 to the '00's, against nuclear bombs and nuclear war; it goes into some detail re the risktaking and actions of both Carter and Gorbachev in stopping near-horror/near-disasters in the early-mid '90s. ---Actually, reading the optimism of the book, written several years ago, is, n light of the past few years' direction/s, depressing (I presume some of you here have read either Ellsberg's The Doomsday Machine or the more recent book by Annie Jacobsen, Nuclear War: A Scenario.

It might be if there was running water, but most places we might rescue people from a small lakes or ponds.
