KeenReader | 193 comments Here are my determination lists for 2025:

Read 12 books written by authors who do not come from the UK or USA

1. Valse Triste by Marcello Fois (Italian author) 2 stars
2. Ghost Town by Kevin Chen (Taiwanese Author) 4 stars
3. Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb (Hungarian author) 3 stars
4. Much Ado about Nada by Uzma Jalaluddin (Canadian author) 4 stars
5.
6.

12.

Twelve classic books.
Since there is no accepted definition of a classic, I've decided that if it's stood the test of time (i.e. it was first published before 1950, but copies are still around now) or a publishing house has published it as a classic (including modern classics) then it counts towards this goal.

Edited to add: My local library has decided to dedicate a shelf to classic books this year, so I will also include any books shelved on their "Classics" shelf.

1. Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin. Published as a Penguin modern classic
2. Breakfast at Tiffany's and Three Stories by Truman Capote Published as a Penguin modern classic
3. Journey by Moonlight by Antal Szerb First published in 1937
4.
5.
6.

8.
9.

12.

Books written in German. I'm just going for two of these, otherwise my brain might melt.

madrano | 23685 comments Thank you for sharing your final decision on what would be included in your '25 Challenge, KeenReader. I'm still working on mine, as i keep changing focus. Me, indecisive? Perish the thought!

I've forgotten, if you mentioned earlier, whether you intend to read the German book in its original language? Was that part of your intent?

Good luck with your goals!

Nothing wrong with carefully considering your options! I wasn't even thinking about my plans for this year when this scheme just popped into my head. The more I thought about it the more I liked it, so I decided to go for it.

Actually, I'm planning on reading in German and English. I've got some dual language books (German on one page, the English translation on the other). I've also got two copies of two books, one in English and the other in German (Auntie Poldi and the Sicilian Lions / Tante Poldi und die sizilianischen Löwen and Tales from the Folly: A Rivers of London Short Story Collection / Der Geist in der British Library und andere Geschichten aus dem Folly). My cunning plan is to read a chapter in English first and then read it in German. Hopefully if I have an idea of the plot, I can fathom out the German (or maybe find out that the translations aren't too close!). Either way, it should be interesting.

Thanks for filling me in on this. I cannot read any other language, even for a child's book. I learned this when i purchased on, as a test. Bummer.

Good luck with this project. We look forward to reading how you did. As well as what you thought about the idea.
