Story was written in in the early 1900s, and the title is something like the The Big Leap" or something similar, and is about a heroine who falls for the H who is a long time friend. He has a rep as a bad boy. It's set somewhere mountainous and in the West.

Heroine is strong minded for the age and what stood out for me as the evil OM is chasing her on skis she makes a huge leap across a mountain chasm to escape him. I think the H had done it earlier or does it later as the evil OM dies trying to do the same ski jump.

The story ends where the hero has created a home for them in a cave in the mountain and proposes.
