C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments The New Pope is Cardinal Robert Prevost. He is an American and is the first American pope. He has chosen the name Leo XIV. I do not know if he is a traditionalist or more of a modernist.

He is a Cubs fan. That is the most important thing. But I just hope that he has a positive relationship with Israel.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Okay, Smokey Robinson has been accused of sexually assaulting several women. He is, of course, denying the charges. My only question is has anyone ever said "Yes. I admit it. I did it."? I certainly don't recall it happening.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Terry Brunk, better known as the wrestler Sabu, has passed away at age 60. Sabu was a proponent of what is termed the 'hardcore' style of professional wresting and chiefly made his reputation in ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling).

Wolves now up 3-1 on Golden State. Yes, the Warriors don't have Curry, but I liked the Wolves as a team to win this series even before the injury. Julius Randle has been fantastic in the playoffs. National media was whining after the Wolves eliminated the Lakers and the LeBron-Luka duo, now they'll whine again after they eliminate Curry and the Warriors.

message 613: by Brina (new)

Brina | 10244 comments Mod
Im whining only because I don’t watch much basketball but if I do watch I want to see LeBron vs Curry and now it looks like Celtics about to be eliminated as well. I’ll stick with hockey.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments The networkds want to see the star matchups in the playoffs because they know the average person is only interested in those. When there wasn't as much competition for the entertainment dollar/eye balls it wasn't as important. That isn't the situation now. Of ourse those eyeballs indicate how much the networks can charge for ads and thus how much they can spend on sports properties. Of course they also hope the viewer of, say the NBA final will stick around to watch other network programing, or be enticed into doing so.

Well...there is this guy on the Timberwolves who gets exposure - last I heard, he's pretty good - goes by the name Anthony Edwards...

And sorry, Brina - looks like my team knocked out both of your guys...

They not my guys. Only guy I have is his Royal Airness and he retired over 20 years ago. Hence reason I don’t watch much hoops anymore.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Everton's current home has gotten a reprieve. Goodison Park was going to be torn down to make way for a redeveloping of the site when Everton moves into its new stadium. However the new owners, who happen to be American, would prefer to see the park somehow incorporated into whatever developement takes place. So now it is going to be turned over to the Everton Women's team for their use.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments So Jason Tatum is done for the playoffs and it seems next season as well. This is not good for the Celtics.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Looking at a comic book cover that was in an email from Pinterest. It was for a non-existant book that pits DC characters agains Marvel characters. In this case it was two teams of Super-Villains. The thing was that as far as DC goes there were a couple I didn't recognize but most I did. However as far as the Marvel side went I have no clue as to who any of them were.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments I know some don't like mixing politics and sports but I have to, as a proud Canadian, share the following quote from today's Morning Brew newsletter. It is part of an article on how tourism to the US is down this year.

"Canada’s response to President Trump’s rhetoric about annexation is giving New York far more problems than the Boston Celtics"

Timberwolves win! Reaching the conference finals for the second consecutive year. Of course, the national announcers were making excuses for the Warriors since Curry was injured…but they so often forget basketball is a team game. Wolves had the better overall team even if Curry was healthy.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments An official with FIFA has suggested that the England should host the World Cup in 2038. Not sure if he meant England or the UK. If the UK then there is a problem in that the four components of the UK are separate countries as far as Football is concerned. See how this plays out I guess.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments The 'naked dress' (now there's an oxymoron if ever I saw one) has been banned at the Cannes Film Festival. Given what is likely to be on the sreen inside that seems a bit sily. Oh well.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments The Eurovision song contest is this weekend. Reading an item on it I discovered that Celine Dion actually competed in it once, representing Switzerland. That was not a one-off either. apparently there have been other timnes when a European country was represented by an artist whowas in fact Canadian. As well one year the song entered in the competition by three different countries had been written by the same Canadian composer. It has gotten to the point that there have been suggestions made that Canada should join the competition.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments I see the Msaple Leafs have been eliminated from the play offs. I don't know why but the Leafs seem to have a problem game seven of series. They may also have a problem with The Panthers. Oh well, maybe next year. I really do think they are cursed by Harold Ballard. They couldn't win the Stanley Cup when he was the owner so now he doesn't want them to win with anyone else owning the team.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Well you can tell Spurs was involved in last night's Europa League final. The only goal scored was a rebound off a defender's arm. The only surprise is that it was in Spurs' favour. Call it Spurs doing Spurs things.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Colts owner Jim Irsay has passed away. Reading the article I learned something I had not been aware of. When Irsay moved the Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis it was because the city was planning on seizing the team using eminent domain. That puts a whole different complextion on the situation. Also, reading about the type of things he collected he might have been a fun guy to have a conversation with over a cup of coffee.

This was a good article I found on Baltimore attempting to use eminent domain on the Colts. Interesting that at the time that Oakland was also trying to use it on the Raiders, even though they were already in Los Angeles.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 12638 comments Not sure about anyone else's reading tastes but I shall post this in case it is of interest to anyone. Author and comic book writer Peter David has passed away at age 68. Most of his comic book work was for Marvel apparently but he did write for DC and others. As for books he wrote a lot of Star Trek as well as some other stuff. I am pretty sure I have read some of what he has written.

The game was last night and Dallas lost 6-1. I don’t like any Dallas teams due to my disdain for the Cowboys. I like the Oilers because they have a Jewish player Hyman. Hopefully they hang on.
