So I think that this was a book that was the beginning of a series I believe I read it in the late 1990s. I believe a human spaceship crash on the planet, but the planet already had a population of sentient wolf creatures with wings. There was another colonizing, alien species that I remember being large bodied aliens, that also wanted to colonize the planet. If I remember correctly, the humans were aligned with the native species against the colonizing aliens.
