Read this between 2008-2011, in a junior high library, so the book was for teens. The story was about a prince who was sent to retrieve a magical fruit for his kingdom. I think the fruit was a peach, or a nectarine? It specifically had to be transported in a chest of ice. It was in a similar style to Lloyd Alexander's The Iron Ring, and it was in a vaguely Middle Eastern setting. I'm pretty sure the main plot of the book was the difficulties the prince went through to bring back the fruit, but it may have just been a sideplot that I happened to remember clearly.

I think you might be right! My only caveat is that I seem to remember an illustration in a cave, but that might just be me. Any other suggestions?
There are four books in the Bartlett series, with the second having a lot of cave scenes - is it possible you read more than one?
