Description: This expressionist novel, characterized by themes of the dreadful wartime fate of humanity, unfolds its narrative from the village of Jašunje near Leskovac, to the prisoner-of-war camp Stalag IIIB near Fürstenberg, on the border between Germany and Poland, and then back again, completing a cycle not only geographically but also temporally, spanning from 1941 to 1945—from the April War to the liberation and the capitulation of the Third Reich. Alongside the story of Boško Stanković, the novel also recounts the life stories of other prisoners, diverse in education, habits, customs, and even nationalities, but united by the historical and fateful circumstances that brought them from different parts of the world to a shared point—the deprivation of freedom and the grim years spent in Stalag, marked by an uncertain fate, hardship, and suffering under the brutal oppression of the Germans.
