PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments Peter Carey is an interesting, award-winning (lots of awards) Aussie author who lives in New York but writes about his homeland. I'm a fan.

I have wanted to read Oscar and Lucinda for years because it sounded great - historical fiction, a pair of odd-bods, and a wild plot. Plus it won the 1988 Booker Prize and the 1989 Miles Franklin (Australia's most prestigious literary award), and I'm trying to read some awarded books. I'm happy I've done so, though this isn't my favourite Carey.

PattyMacDotComma | 3317 comments On the other hand, I read A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman Maclean and completely understand why it is often referred to as an American classic despite not winning a bunch of awards. Just stunning, and the lengthy foreword by Annie Proulx for the 25th anniversary edition is excellent.

What Does It Feel Like? by Sophie Kinsella
4 stars
Deeply personal and disarmingly honest mirroring her own life

Hello Stranger by Katherine Center
Started off well, but the final quarter was OTT. Still, an entertaining novel for the most part.

Stay Awake by Megan Goldin
Good enough for a one-time read, as long as you don't overthink it.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 741 comments Three books in an upcoming historical fiction series by J.H. Foster. The WWII story setting might be done but the approach makes this series different.

1. The Rebellious Maus and the Pogrom
The Rebellious Maus and the Pogrom (Rebels and Resistance) by J.H. Foster
The prequel that fulfils its duty well.

2. Sewing Resistance - Seamstress, spy, survivor?
Sewing Resistance - Seamstress, spy, survivor? (Rebels and Resistance) by J.H. Foster
The main novel, written from the point of view of a young Jewish mother and aimed at adult readers.

3. Boy, Resisting - Silent, Spy, Survivor?
Boy, Resisting - Silent, Spy, Survivor? (Rebels and Resistance) by J.H. Foster
A companion novel with the same events as in the main novel, but written from the point of view of her young son and aimed at tweens and younger teens.

The set is surprisingly effective as a package deal. I love the idea of a parent-child buddy read with such a series.

A good short story collection, as long as you are prepared for dark content. I wasn't!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 10006 comments The second book in Matthew Spencer's Rose Riley series, Broke Road: Rose Riley, Book 2, is possibly even better than the first, and Kellie Jones does an excellent narration. 5★s
