It's often debated whether anything LGBTQ-related should be in kids' books, and I understand why people think that, though I don't agree.
But if LGBTQ content shouldn't be in kids books, what about religious stuff? Should God or another deity be mentioned?
And let me clarify something: by "should be" I mean, should these sorts of books be read in schools, or widely available to children?
Take the Wingfeather Saga, a popular choldrens' book series. In the book, "The Creator" and praying are mentioned several times. But the book has gotten pretty much no backlash for having religious content in it.
Then there's Keeper of the Lost Cities, a middle-grade series. In a recent book in that series, two gay couples are briefly mentioned. The author got a ton of backlash for that, and people are pushing her to remove the scenes.
If LGBTQ content should get so much backlash in a childrens' book, why should religious content be tolerated? Why is LGBTQ stuff getting so much backlash anyway? Discuss.

Just because something CAN lead to sex doesn't mean it always will. Showing LGBTQ+ characters kissing or dating isn't going to make children want gay sex. It'll expose them to the real world, and not become bigoted homophobes later on because they were always "sheltered from an evil".
Heres another thing: Who in the world is writing books with sex in them and then labeling them as childrens books?

THERE'S BOOKS LIKE THAT?!!??! ARENT THOSE YA BOOKS?"
BUT THOSE ARENT LABELLED AS CHILDRENS BOOKS BUDDY T^T

That a really good question.

Well, this debate is about LGBTQ+ content in CHILDRENS books. I mean, what does sex in children books in general shouldn't be a thing, not just LGBTQ+ stuff.

I mean... there SHOULDNT be any. Not for CHILDREN childrens books. Maybe YA, but this debate is about childrens books, not YA books.

that was our point. There isn't sex in children's books. Elliots question was rhetorical as far as I could tell xD
I think it should be allowed, amongst religious content as well. children should read a variety of things, see all the diverse viewpoints of the world and then decide where they stand when they get older
I agree. They shouldn't be denied the right to see diversity in their books, but definitely no sexual content.

Another common argument people use is that having LGBTQ stuff in books is "pushing an agenda". Like how? How is that different than having a religious character, or racial diversity in a book? No judgement, I just don't understand

YES

for kids books yes. for adult/ya books sexual stuff is fine.
Em wrote: "omg yes i think they should totally put more lgbtq+ content in children's books, bc otherwise they're gonna grow up thinking that this stuff is wrong, usually homophobia etc is a taught behaviour"
i think homophobia is less of a taught behavior and more of a reaction to something seen as weird. like all the kids at school think gay people are weird, and that's prob bc they did not grow up hearing about gay people

yes, we were just talking specifically about children's stuff because yes

Have you seen Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure?"
OMG YES I CAN RANT ABOUT THIS SM

If a straight couple was holding hands on screen, no one would bat an eye, but due to societal oppression and western civilization being gay is automatically sexualized unlike being hetrosexual.
I am a queer Mormon guy. I believe in God and I also am okay with knowing that I am queer. Honestly, showcasing praying in a childrens book is absolutely fine. So is illustrating a gay couple holding hands.
We, as a society need to stop making education harder to access for our youth and hide behind the label in the name of "Protecting our Children".
For these reasons, I believe that LBGTQ+ representation ought to be normalized in children's books, thank you.

100% agree, Pierce!
100% agree, Pierce!

I believe for awareness purposes, yes. Not to encourage or discourage but to create awareness both should be allowed. It's to make sure that children are aware of life and the options that open up as they grow older.
I think that people should be able to put whatever (age appropriate) things that want in kids books, this includes lgbt themes, religious themes, feminist themes or anything of the such. This includes more conservative themes. It's protected under the first amendment in the US. It's up to parents to control what their kids read.

But, but, maybe they havent found the right person yet!! /j

Not an ignorant question at all!!
Ace is the shortened version of Asexual, which is when someone has little to no sexual attraction to another person
Theres also Aro, which is Aromantic. Its basically the same thing but with little to no romantic attraction.

they want us to be abstinent till marriage but don't like it when we are ace/aro

sex is disgusting and a sin until someone is ace and then its natural and what makes us human??? like no actually its "select all images with boat" but go off i guess
