A dark but entertaining tale of the misfortunes of three bright children-turned-orphans and the evil distant relative who is on the hunt to steal their fortune.
Though the series is intended for younger readers, there are definitely some really dark themes in this introduction to the series, including child abuse/neglect, child marriage, murder, and threatened incest. My adult brain initially recoiled at these being in a book aimed at young readers until I remembered that at the target age, my favorite author was John Bellairs who wrote about some dark themes himself. After that I was able to relax and enjoy the fantastical and pretty wildly depressing tale of the three orphans. The audiobook was narrated by Tim Curry which made the experience even more enjoyable. I'll look forward to casually continuing the series between other reads.
