Hate is a big topic in the novel. What types of discrimination have you experienced? How did it affect you? Were the effects long-term? How did you get past it?

Feeling judged and persecuted was the main source of conflict in the book. While most of us (hopefully) have not experienced a hate crime during our lives, we have all experienced judgement or criticism that has affected our sense of self/identity. How does this, in turn, affect our moods, behavior, and relationships?
