This is a sci-fi/fantasy short story from the 50s or 60s, maybe older. The premise is that every alternate dimension has its own adam and eve. A team (troubleshooters of some kind) has to make sure they eat the apple, because if they don't, they will be all powerful and without conscience; rampaging through entire worlds destroying them. Since they didn't disobey, they don't know right from wrong, and they retain dominion over everything and can do whatever they want. The protagonists have to make sure that doesn't happen.
