Second historical mystery starring Captain Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee. The modern prince of wealthy Sambalpore is an old university classmate of Banerjee and asks for help with some threatening letters. When that prince is assassinated on Wyndham's watch he and Banerjee travel for the funeral and are given permission by the Maharajah to investigate more deeply. Annie Grant is a newer acquaintance of the prince and also travels for the funeral.
I like this series. A good mix of history and mystery, plenty of detail and action. Banerjee was a bit superfluous in this novel, with Annie Grant providing more assistance. I'd be happy for them both to get more time in future books. Some modern sensibilities around the British creep in, but the historical period and Indian characters provide a reasonable source for them to be voiced so it's not as weird as in some historical fiction.
