Remembering Laughter by Wallace Stegner - 4* - My Review

Margaret and Alec Stuart own a farm on the Iowa prairie. They have recently been growing apart due to Alec’s drinking. When Margaret’s younger sister, Elspeth, arrives from Scotland, unanticipated events take place that impact all their lives. This short novel was Wallace Stegner’s debut. It is beautifully written with a strong sense of place and well-crafted characters. Readers are aware that something serious has happened from the first chapter. It includes many psychological insights and explores the ways people bring troubles upon themselves. Stegner is one of my favorite authors and while this novel is not quite as complex as his later works, it is still noteworthy. My favorites are The Big Rock Candy Mountain, Angle of Repose, Crossing to Safety, and The Spectator Bird.
