I am the odd person who liked this book better than the more famous A Gentleman in Moscow. This one is largely a love letter to NYC, and as such belongs with books like Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk and City of Girls.
I gave it 4 stars because I love his writing, but in my review noted that the story itself is only 3 stars. It's his debut novel, I think. My favourite of the three of his that I've read is A Gentleman in Moscow which was also the first one I read by him.
I did likevthis quite a lot. It felt as if it told of the generation in NYC between the World Wars, an American 'Lost Generation' if you will. One of the things I like so much about Towles, at least as of this point in his writing career, is that his books are unpredictable in every way. Ann Patchett is similar.
