John | 93 comments Hi Alexis,

I have a contemporary novel at 158k words.

Blurb:
One morning in a coffee shop, Alex is beside himself to meet Pete Shehann, whom it seems has some experience in the very subject of which he is a self-proclaimed enthusiast. Reluctant yet prompted, Pete shares his story, beginning with how his father abandoned him as a child in rural 1930s Oklahoma, leaving him embittered and believing himself a failure, proven time and again. And marrying May couldn’t be luck at all but a fluke, even if she has her own problems. After losing all of her family in a tragic accident, a terrible void remains, and she wants children more than anything.

An unexpected inheritance raises suspicions yet sends Pete and May to a new life in Oregon, where they meet Stevens, the attorney handling the inheritance and proving himself a faithful friend in the years to come. But a tragedy that happened on their journey haunts Pete, eventually conforming to an eerie parallel with May after her health fails following the negative results of an infertility test. It greatly disturbs Pete to discover he isn’t even enough for his own wife to want to live, but he determines to do whatever it takes to save her. And what of himself? Is he destined a lifetime of failure?

Content warning: rape

Abbey | 7 comments Hi Alexis!
Would you be interested in a YA fantasy with bitey monsters, magical sword fights, and the power of friendship?

It's a completed 130K novel set in a fantasy medieval realm, and includes a slow-burn romance sub-plot.

Most of the book takes place in a country where the locals have all shades of brown skin. If there's anything about this world-building that you notice that I can't, I would really appreciate the feedback.

BLURB:

***
Monsters have plagued his city before. Now, two years later, they're back.

Still struggling to make peace with his past, Tristan Avron meets a girl carrying the magical crystal from his bedtime stories. Desperate for answers, he and his friends set out on a journey to find out where the monsters come from.

But it's not long before they make enemies with someone with strange abilities, and the farther they search, the more they realize what it may cost to stop them.
***

What this novel has:

-Men have feelings
-Women play an active role
-Occasional descriptions of violence (not explicit)
-Swordfights/magic

Let me know if you're interested, and I can send a sample chapter.

Rachelle Raub | 2 comments Hello Alexis,

I am looking for Beta readers for my completed novel.

Chamber of Whispers is a YA fantasy–magical realism mystery/action/adventure novel.

(In magical realism, fantasy elements are treated as normal and woven into the everyday world. The magic is ordinary and plausible, and the impossible is considered normal.)

This story follows a young college student, Harper Miles, who has the unique ability to shapeshift. Harper knows this unique ability will give her an edge in her future career as a Criminal Investigator. Only a few months before graduating, she loses her mother to cancer; while learning to cope with her mother's passing, Harper witnesses a murder one night while prowling as a cat and impulsively grabs an envelope in the victim's possession before fleeing into the bushes. Harper quickly discovers the envelope's mysterious contents have deep connections with The Chicago underworld, a sinister world she knows nothing about but is now suddenly intertwined in her life. Hired on with the Green Ash Police Department, Harper is quickly assigned to assist her department and the FBI on this case, which puts her shapeshifting skills to the test, turning the underworld upside down.

The setting is present-day—Green Ash, Mississippi, on the Gulf Coast.

The novel's word count is 90K

I would greatly appreciate it if you could look at my work and give me constructive criticism. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you

Thom Brannan | 39 comments I'm looking for a beta for one of two projects:

Plague of Locusts is an apocalyptic sci-fi western (say that three times fast) and sequel to Lords of Night. It is set twenty years-ish after the first book and is mostly about the struggle to rebuild after an event and how regular people and the Locust People will be able to coexist. (Or not. Hint.) This weighs in at a respectable 96k words.

Victim of Changes is a time travel book about several things, but mostly about hope. From the cover letter:

Victim of Changes (106K words) is a sci-fi adventure, a story of time travel and destiny. It's the story of Mikayla Tombs, an entrepreneur who founds a time-travel agency, and Veronica Fleet, one of her Agents who eventually becomes one of her enemies. Mikayla's company, Novus, is a wealth-creation machine, equipping all sides of every time travel vacation jaunt and feud.

While chasing down a wily asset, Veronica Fleet finds herself on the wrong side of Novus and experiences what it's like to be one of the native time travelers she hunts down for the company. She then dedicates herself to righting the wrongs she and others like her have done, and along the way she enlists the help of Cat Nano, an archaeologist and long-time friend and partner of Mikayla Tombs.

Together, they hatch a plan which will not only create a safe world for travelers, but which might also be the key to saving Humanity. They only have to live to pull it off.

Please let me know if either of these tickle your fancies.

Steven Freeman | 58 comments Hi Alexis,

I would love for you to beta read my historical fiction novel. I just sent it to my primary editor a few days ago, so it will be ready for beta-reading in 4 - 6 weeks.

Following is the blurb...
Thanks to Leonardo da Vinci’s miraculous new cannon, the Republic of Florence has defeated a superior naval force. But the victory comes at a cost: the Annunciation—a sacred painting said to protect the Republic from foreign invasion—has been stolen.

After Florentine spy Elena Borseli sends word of the Annunciation’s location in an underground lair beneath Notre Dame Cathedral, she falls into an ominous silence.

Enigmatic sea captain Niccolo Corsini has been tasked with an impossible mission: lead a small band into the heart of France to recover the Annunciation and rescue Lady Borseli from the infamous Bastille Prison. Yet even if he succeeds in either objective, how can he hope transport his Florentine Order across hundreds of miles of hostile territory? And do so in time to warn the Republic of the threat of an imminent invasion?

I hope to hear from you soon! (email: steve.freeman7@gmail.com)

Michael Roth | 12 comments Hi Alexis,

I would love for you to read my Post-Apocalyptic Catholic Action-Adventure story (195k words).

Blurb -

It is the cusp of the end of religious freedom in the United States as the government enacts new draconian anti-religious laws, and churches of many denominations begin organizing an underground effort to fight the rising persecution.

Before they can ramp up their struggle, a mysterious and terrible enemy appears. This new threat is bent on the destruction of all mankind or its subjugation under their rule. Lukas Dubois, a recent widower and Vatican Astronomer, along with the Roman Pontiff get caught up in the events. When international leaders refuse to submit, the enemy ruthlessly attacks.

In the immediate aftermath, society swiftly crumbles and thrusts people into a new medieval age without an apparent explanation, forcing Catholic husband and father, Greg Meyer, who is also a martial artist, to engage in a fight for the survival of his family. Greg focuses his efforts on recreating a knightly order of the Catholic Church to combat the new challenges. Adapt or die is the catchphrase.

Will the creation of a new Knightly Order be the world’s only chance?

Thanks!

Robert Barrio | 9 comments Hi, I have a sci fi thriller that I'm looking to have beta read, its been read before but I'd like another opinion just to get another set of eyes on it. Here is a short description:
What would you do if you were sitting on your boat gazing over the side and a sleek, ferocious killing machine swam by barely in your sight in the murky water. Then it makes another pass and drags its razor sharp fingernails along the hull, the sunlight gleaming off its jagged teeth as you strain to see what it is.
This is real life for Brent Fisher as he tries to survive in the small town of Fortune.

Diana | 5 comments Hello! :)

I know this is rather atypical, but I'm a fanfic writer with a deep passion for writing. I've tried to find beta readers within my community, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. As a non-native English speaker, I'm quite self-conscious about my work. It would be a dream come true to finally have someone who could help me correct basic grammar errors and perhaps even offer some tips on how to improve my writing.

I mainly write fanfiction for the Hunter x Hunter fandom, and occasionally, my stories include explicit content. Thank you for reading this, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Humphrey Archer | 2 comments H
Are you interested in short stoty collections?

The stories are like "Final Destination" meets "The Monkey's Paw" (W. W. Jacobs, 1902). They are a little bit Roald Dahl with a hint of Poe. As such, they are tragedies more than either mysteries or horror, and would appeal most to readers who enjoy the inexorable pull of a story arc that leads to doom. In each story, a protagonist (usually a rotter), makes a wish that comes true with fatal results for someone, often the person making the wish. Sometimes the victim is just a nice person with bad luck.

Tim | 12 comments Birds of America Hell

Multi-genre 88.5k word cleanly edited complete contemporary fantasy novel by retired criminal defense lawyer & former JAG officer U.S. Navy. Something different. Comp Tim Powers, Philip K. Dick (not claiming that quality, just giving an idea.) Themes: relationships, regret, perils of immortality, moral degradation in war, and a jaundiced view of the Cold War to the present.

After 30 years in Hell, Major Connor Galloway, USAF (MIA) is used to weird. But when a sightseeing charter reveals a shocking past he missed, he and the volatile Romanian crew of his ancient DC-3 are drawn into the diabolically inept Conspiracy to Change Everything. The prize: a way back to the world he left if he wants it. He must first survive the might of American Hell and the hidden agendas of friends and allies. Everyone is in Hell for a reason. Our Lady of Chaos may be rolling loaded dice for Galloway, but she loves irony. A darkly satirical blend of alternate history, aviation adventure, and military thriller in an original fantasy setting.

I'm a new author and looking for some feedback on my debut book "In a Bed of Crocuses". It is a MMF romance fantasy with tropes like; fated mates, happy ending, magic is real and burn it with fire. If you like romantasy that doesn't make you wait until the end for spicy moments, you may like this story as it begins as a holiday romance but after they leave the resort the MCs relationships are challenged with busy schedules, family drama, and a magical mystery centered around a strange plant.

I have a children's ("early reader") manuscript that is fewer than 1350 words due to my reader category. I'm looking for feedback on style, pacing, dialogue, potential interest for a children's audience, etc. I'd love to get your eyes on it and maybe you know any children who would also give it a read?

In any case, here is a brief synopsis:

Hi Alexis,

I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to reach out because I've written a self-help book and would love to get your honest feedback on it. The book was a bit of a passion project, sparked after a difficult breakup, and it turned into something more—a guide for navigating grief and the tough moments in life. I’ve packed it with practical advice and included humor and some personal, witty stories to keep it light and accessible. It’s a quick, easy read, and I’m hoping the tone resonates. If you have a chance to read it, I’d be so grateful to hear your thoughts!

Thanks so much for considering it!

Warmly,
Victoria

Leila | 3 comments Hi! I have a novel titled “To our daughters” with 46433 words. To Our Daughters follows a young woman navigating a series of tumultuous relationships, each teaching her vital lessons about love and self-worth. After experiencing the chaotic love of her first romance with Matty, she confronts the painful realization that love should not come at the cost of her identity. Each subsequent relationship serves as a stepping stone, revealing the complexities of her heart and the weight of expectations.
Ultimately, she finds herself drawn to Dan, a steady presence who offers the kind of simple, unconditional love she never thought possible. Through their relationship, she learns that true love uplifts and empowers, allowing her to reclaim her sense of self.
This novel resonates with anyone who has felt lost in the complexities of relationships, offering a powerful message about the importance of self-love. Filled with raw emotion and relatable experiences, it serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that healing is possible when we learn to value ourselves.

This is my first ever novel and it’s very near and dear to my heart. I would like any feedback you have! My goal is to get this professionally published and I would love to know what readers think and how I could make it better. Thank you in advance ♥️

Hi Alexis,

I'm looking for a final beta reader after making some tweaks based on my last beta reader's suggestions before I send out my query letter.

It is fantasy, set in a world of dragons, elves, and druids. It is a coming-of-age story for a young druid who can't control his magic, falls in love with a druidess, and meets up with a cantankerous old man who takes him on as an apprentice. The young druid serves a mad king who wants to unite five kingdoms into one empire. But to do so, he must rid himself of the druids and ensure that a door between his world and the world of Fae remains locked.

If you are interested in beta-reading, please contact me at my university email address: mi.cote@northeastern.edu.

P.S. The last beta reader said it was interesting enough that she couldn't put it don't and read it in three days straight. I thought that was encouraging. Any story or novel should be fun and interesting to read and that is what I am striving for in this first of a seven-series novel.

Seeking beta readers for my first novel. I need honest feedback please.

Blurb:

In a small mountain city of St. Georgetown where historic brick buildings blend with modern cityscape, a battle of romance between two young women unfolds.

“Who could possibly be my equal when you’re a girl with wealth, status, and looks? What man could even grab my attention when all men are beneath me?” These are the beliefs of Marianna, a billion-dollar heiress who wears the mask of an elegant and kind person in public, while hiding how highly she thinks of herself above others.

“My long time crush just asked for my number?! He doesn’t even recognize me after I reinvented myself. What if I tell him we actually met before?!” Samantha considered herself the stereotypical geeky girl who truly bloomed only the previous summer, now interacts with the crush she had admired from afar.

The two women find themselves involved with Nolen, a seemingly normal and average guy, in almost every way on the surface. The more Marianna and Samantha learn about Nolen, the more they feel him being “Normal” might be just a facade. As bodies are found from a vicious animal attack, a dark shadow looms over St. Georgestown interrupting their quaint, mundane lives.

Craig Adams | 3 comments Hello. I've recently finished my suspense fiction novel and I'm looking for honest feedback. It's long but everyone who's read it so far said that it was justified. It's currently 135k words.
It's about Derian Sargis, a young man with extraordinary shooting skills, who is fascinated by the Wild West. Frustrated by the tedium of organized shooting sports, he discovers a way to restore the excitement that he’d once felt when he wrapped his hand around the grip of a pistol by organizing a quickdraw shooting club. Before long, The Gunslinger’s Club rapidly expands into a violent, worldwide phenomenon for which he is unfairly held accountable. For the sake of his precious Anyia, he struggles to suppress his rageful lust for vengeance long enough to clear his name, while being hunted by a mysterious villain who systematically destroys everything that he holds dear.
“In The Beginning” is an emotional coming-of-age thrill ride with unforgettable characters and explosive conflicts that document Derian’s involuntary progression from a calm, fun-loving, young boy to hardened gunfighter on the run. A fugitive from the law with a bounty on his head, he does his best to navigate his path to redemption, while relying on nothing more than quick thinking and an even quicker draw.
As the first act of a visionary tale, showcasing the ultimate battle between the forces of good and evil, “In the Beginning” is a delight for readers who enjoy unique characters, dynamic and humorous dialogue, fast-paced action and a cornucopia of raw human emotion.

This is an inspiring Christian novel that follows the life of Samantha, a compassionate nurse who has faced her share of personal trials but continues to rely on her unwavering faith in Jesus. Despite the challenges life throws her way, Samantha believes that as long as she puts Jesus first, everything will fall into place.

Samantha's world shifts when she meets Daniel, a widowed schoolteacher who has been struggling with deep resentment and anger toward God after the death of his wife two years ago. Unable to reconcile his grief and the pain of loss, Daniel has distanced himself from his faith, abandoned attending church services, and no longer nurtures a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Their paths cross by chance, and an undeniable spark ignites between them. However, Daniel fears that she will walk away if Samantha learns the truth about his disillusionment with God. So, he keeps his struggles hidden, unsure how to reconcile his feelings for her with the unresolved tension in his heart.

As Samantha and Daniel grow closer, the story unfolds with themes of healing, redemption, and the transformative power of grace. Samantha’s steadfast belief in God challenges Daniel to confront his anger and his pain, while Daniel’s vulnerability opens Samantha’s heart to a new understanding of faith and love.

This novel is a heartwarming tale about the power of faith, forgiveness, and the healing that comes when we allow God to lead us through life’s storms. It reminds readers that no matter how broken we may feel, God's love has the power to restore and bring new hope.

Robin Huang | 9 comments Hey Alexis!

I have a few things I've completed and would love for someone to beta read them. Hopefully some resonate with you!

I have a ~7K short story about a former miner stuck in a dying Appalachian town, his strained relationship with his son, and the weight of the past keeping them both trapped. It explores themes of generational cycles, addiction, and the idea of home as both comfort and cage. Would love feedback on pacing, character depth, and emotional impact. This is I would say a short story grounded in realism, so let me know if that's not your cup of tea.

Another story I've completed is a ~4K short story about music, obsession, and the search for something just beyond reach—a sound that lingers after everything else has ended. Charlie, a washed-up saxophonist, is drawn to Laura, a woman whose voice pulls him deeper into this chase. She is both muse and siren, promising something beautiful but leading him toward a precipice. Together, they push the limits of music, of themselves, of reality itself—chasing a sound that may not even exist. Would love feedback on the emotional undercurrents and whether the story’s themes—art as hunger, sound as a haunting, and the thin line between creation and destruction—come through effectively.

Finally--this is a longer one--I have a ~60K magical realist novel completed called Lady Lo. Lo Ting, once a rising actress in Hong Kong, now makes a living as a cardboard collector in Sham Shui Po, pushing through the heat, the city’s indifference, and the weight of regret. When a minor injury on her leg refuses to heal—expanding, glowing, pulsing with an eerie life of its own—Lo is forced to confront the past she’s spent decades burying. The wound isn’t just an injury; it’s an unraveling. Through it, she begins to slip between reality and something stranger, something magical, where memories are as tangible as the neon-lit streets she walks, and the past refuse to stay buried. At the heart of it all is her son, Mahn Hohn, whom she left behind years ago. As the boundary between reality and the magical fractures, Lo embarks on a desperate search to find him before the city, or her own unraveling body, consumes her entirely.

Let me know if you’re interested in any of these! Thanks so much!

Chris Marshall | 18 comments Hi Alexi
Would you be interested in beta reading my 72000 mystery story? In Beneath the Breaking Lines, the lives of several individuals converge around a fatal bus crash, revealing how a single act can unravel everything with devastating consequences of deceit and the fragility of truth. Cooper Reeves, the owner of a struggling bus repair company, faces the consequences of his past as he works to rebuild the wrecked bus, haunted by guilt and the weight of his decisions. His journey becomes a quest for redemption, not just for the bus, but for himself and his fractured relationships, especially with his wife, Samantha. The line between innocence and guilt, between success and failure, is razor-thin, and as Cooper’s past collides with the present, the weight of those breaking points pushes him toward an irreversible transformation.
Throughout the story, the characters grapple with their breaking points—moments where a single choice or flaw changes their lives forever. Yet, despite the lies and betrayals, there is justice in the end. The truth comes to light, offering some measure of closure to those left behind after losing their loved ones. In the aftermath of the crash, Cooper and Amy’s bond deepens as they work together to restore the bus, symbolising the repair of broken parts of themselves. As Cooper and Amy’s connection grows, Cooper comes to realise that perfection is an illusion, and it’s the imperfection, the moments of breakdown, that shape them. The bus, once a symbol of destruction, is now a symbol of renewal, and Cooper finds himself married, beginning a new chapter in life. The journey from tragedy to healing, from fault to forgiveness, unfolds beneath the breaking lines of fate.

Shayla | 6 comments Hi Alexis, if you're still kicking around on here I'd love to have you beta read my paranormal fantasy, Blood Glamours, which is complete at 110,000 words. Even a partial read would be awesome.

Here’s the elevator pitch. Please let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

*****

Life as a smuggler suited Deyl Parker very well—until one bad decision put thousands of fae lives at risk.

For two centuries, war between humans and fae has ravaged North America. While humans cower inside their walled-in mega-cities, the military’s Hunters scour the lands between for all that remains of the fae. Against this backdrop of fear and strife, Deyl and her partner Logan—protected by her unique magic—have made a lucrative living smuggling supplies into fae hands.

Their most valuable export? Blood glamours—a blend of Deyl’s distinctive magic and Logan’s science, and the only substance capable of fooling the Hunters’ blood signature tests. For the fae living in hiding, these are priceless. Logan, however, wanted more. When he begins selling blood glamours to the Resistance, he leads the Hunters straight to them—and gets captured in the process.

Logan knows far too much. If the Hunters break him, they’ll uncover the location of thousands of hidden fae—and learn far too much about Deyl herself. To save him, she must trade in her smuggling shoes for combat boots, and join forces with a Resistance wolf shifter, an elf with broken magic, and a mage too smart for his own good. Their mission is reckless, possibly suicidal—but Deyl has no choice. Because if Logan talks, it’ll spell the end for all faekind.

Jasmine Flowers | 11 comments Hi! Your offer sounds great. I have a psychological thriller/contemporary fiction manuscript that I'd love to have beta read. It's titled 'Justification'. It's approximately 50,000 words.

Here's a quick synopsis:

After surviving a brutal sexual assault, Averi struggles to navigate the aftermath—haunted by flashbacks, battling shame, and searching for justice in a system stacked against her. When the legal route proves futile, her mother moves them to a new town, hoping for a fresh start. But trauma doesn’t disappear with distance.

At her mother’s insistence, Averi attends a support group, where she meets Emily—sharp, fearless, and harboring her own painful past. A tentative friendship forms, built on shared wounds and unspoken rage. When Averi unexpectedly comes face-to-face with one of her attackers, the fragile foundation of her healing shatters. Emily offers a new path: revenge.

As their plan unfolds, Averi finds herself slipping further into the darkness, torn between the desire for retribution and the fear of losing herself in the process. But Emily is relentless, feeding the fire inside Averi until revenge becomes more than an idea—it becomes an obsession.

Then, everything spirals. Blood is spilled. Secrets unravel. And when Emily ends up dead, Averi is left with one terrifying question: If she wasn’t the one who killed Emily… who did?

Let me know if this sounds like something you'd be interested in

Rachel Hendricks | 13 comments I’m currently looking for beta readers for my novella, Whispers of Wings and Whimpers, and I thought you might be a great fit!

It’s a dark fantasy with supernatural elements, exploring themes of morality, consequence, and the fine line between light and darkness. The story follows a group of characters entangled in an otherworldly conflict, where choices carry weight and redemption isn’t easily won. With angels, magic, and an unfolding mystery, it’s a character-driven tale full of tension and emotion.

Since this story has some intense themes, I want to be upfront about the content warnings:

Psychological manipulation & coercion

Mild fantasy violence

Themes of regret, redemption, and emotional turmoil

A kidnapping scenario (handled without excessive detail)

The novella is 24,624 words long. If you’re interested, I’d love to send it your way! No pressure at all, and if it’s not the right fit, I completely understand.
