Hi, Alexis! Would you be interested in Beta Reading an 80,000 word Adult Sci-Fi Horror novel?

The premise is essentially Alien if Ripley was the captain and chose to not go toward the distress signal. My main character Niamh Blainey is a captain of a commercial cargo ship that picks up a distress beacon in the outer rim and initially chooses to ignore it when they discover it's coming from what they assume to be an alien vessel. Unfortunately, her first officer who is also her sister decides they should check it out. Niamh wakes up the next day and finds half of her crew missing and has to go find them on the Alien vessel.

I'm pretty casual when it comes to beta
reading. Any and all criticism is appreciated: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Please tell me what works, what doesn't, what you like, what you don't like,
any and all suggestions, how the story flows, grammar mistakes, etc.

I'd like comments back to
me by May 9th, but I understand that April is Tax Month and Life Happens. If
you decide you'd like to, just keep me updated, and let me know if I need to be
flexible on the reading time. I do have an Indian character who practices Hinduism, so any particular insights into her character would be appreciated.

Hey Alexis!
I'm currently looking for beta readers for my book titled "MAXUM." It is a YA romantasy. Here is the blurb :)

Advice: Never fall in love with your best friend’s girlfriend.

Seventeen-year-old, confident Zach Taylor was born and raised in poverty in the small town of Maryfield, Oregon. As the bank is about to foreclose on his mother’s home, he hatches a plan to get funding for a Memory Insertion company that his father tried to start before he died.

Zach’s friend Jason sneaks him into a secret event called the Masked Investor, held at an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town. But something is off that night. First, a brown-masked investor says the word “human” like it's an insult. Then, Zach finds Jason having a whispered discussion in a conservatory “off-limits” to guests. He thinks the strangeness of the night is over when he arrives home, but Jason texts him a dropped pin—along with three of his friends—asking to meet on the same gravel road as the Masked Investor.

By the time Zach arrives… Jason’s car is at the bottom of a cliff.

That’s when Sarah lays her head on Zach’s shoulder.

But it was wrong. He shouldn’t have feelings for her.

For Jason’s girlfriend.

zean (natchaopakul) | 4 comments Hi Alexis,

I just completed my manuscript and I'm looking for a beta reader. It's a 99k word psychological-thriller (with romance and noir elements).

A woman crafted for revenge and the billionaire with a dark past—but only one of them will make it out whole."

Set in 1999, The Seduction Playbook is a dual POV psychological thriller about a woman who has meticulously crafted the perfect seduction to destroy the man who ruined her—only to uncover a truth far more twisted than she ever imagined, one that threatens to unravel everything, including herself. It blends the unhinged female energy of Gone Girl, the intoxicating tension of Verity, and the ruthless power dynamics of Succession.

If you're interested please let me know!

Gregory Pielow | 2 comments Hi Alexis,

I have a completed action adventure novel. It is 138000 words.

A very brief synopsis is:

The story starts in the real pirate town of Xcalak Mexico. Even though it is set in a pirate town this is not a pirate novel. The protagonist is a Maya woman living in the town. The story is about her escaping the town and returning golden Maya artifacts.

The story jumps ahead ten generations to her current day descendant living in Mexico. She inherits a three hundred year old parchment from her estranged grandmother showing the location of the artifacts that were hidden years before. She discovers the amazing site where they were kept.

I hope it interests you.

Thanks,
Pete

Bets (betsdavies) | 18 comments still looking for books? I'm attempting to re put out something I did in the wrong genre--I wrote as adult fantasy and realized I'm doing na/ya coming of age with fantasy. I could use a few more readers. one of the characters is open to both sexes but won't identify as anything in his back ground but is with a female character in the book if that is the kind of thing you would like to know. There is (again, as back story, not correct events) in self harm and a statuary rapist who is now not who the person is with.

this is a very rough description but maybe you can get an idea. I don't know if you are still looking, but I am still interested. I really liked your description of your work.

I’m Alexandra Graham, I’m eighteen. A new adult, YA fantasy novel, Black Sheep is the first book in the Vorlin trilogy. My dad runs the Exiles—the mob made up of Vorlin exiled from their home world.
I never mean to be a hero. I run. I keep running until my friends and I get caught. My father drags us home.

I run away from home with a weird group of strangers in order to get away from my family. Then I found a new family, and a new home. I grew up with the rich and spoilt in the world of the Exiles criminal masterminds. I only knew about the rich and spoilt part. The criminal part, maybe I assumed some white collar crime was going on, but not in the order of murdering people after removing all their fingers and toes from them when alive. I never would have believed if I hadn’t had to flee school and see Robin’ shot for running.
Robin’s the weird artist kid who crammed too much life in too short a time, but he’s an empath. They’re like that. I’m a telepath. We all have a power we do well. Ryan’s a Firestarter. The home world Vorlin are after Robin to be a reluctant heir. He’s not stopping running anymore than I am.
We’re on a search for Grey Stone—the guy Marcus’s dad found to teach us, but he isn’t so easy to find and we keep running into Exiles on the way. They’re scared of him. Everyone is.
He holds the mirror that joins the two worlds and makes mirror travel possible. Besides being mad powerful, no one wants to hurt Grey Stone for fear the mirror will break, and they’ll lose the way to go home. I don’t care as long as he can teach me how to control sending and receiving thoughts. It’s too powerful, especially with an empath. I’ll lose it. So’ll he.
In the firstr book, we discover what we are, and the things we can do. We track down a book of info that helps us figure out to find Grey Stone. Ryan’s friends try to chase us down. Right when it looks like we’re getting free, those of the home Vorlin who don’t want Robin to be heir come to kill him. Ryan crisps one to death instead.
By the in of the book, we’ve made it as far as finding Grey Stone’s home in Mississippi, but he isn’t there. We decide to wait it out till we know how to find him. Until then, they’re afraid to come get us.
The last of the Vorlin we run into is Tom—my boyfriend. Even before we ran, I realized I didn’t want to be his baby aymore, but he’s all I’ve ever had besides daddy’s world, and I’m afraid to be anything else. All the same, we run from him too when I realize what I have is my new friends, and perhaps something more in Robin.

Thanks for looking. the easiest way to get to me is betsdavies@comcast.net

Sage | 3 comments Hi Alexis!
Thank you so much for offering your support! I’d love to share my current project–it’s a YA magical realism novel that follows a young girl navigating the complexities of entering adulthood and the changing relationships in her life. It’s a slower, introspective coming-of-age story that explores female friendship, challenging family dynamics, and the fears of change and rejection. All of it takes place in a fictional, 1920s-inspired coastal town, with subtle folklore and magical elements.
The manuscript is currently around 68K words, and I’m currently in the editing phase with my rough draft. I’d appreciate any feedback you have if you’re interested, especially in the following areas:
– Overall pacing of the story and chapters
– Clarity and repetition in writing
– Emotional beats and relationship developments
– Any other thoughts you’d like to share
Thanks again—I really appreciate your time and insight!
My email is sagecelestewrites@gmail.com
Thanks,
Sage.

Bets (betsdavies) | 18 comments rats I tried to pos and somehow failed. I was interested I what you wrote about yourself. It sounds like you would have an interesting perpespective.

I'm redoing a book I self published in the wrong genre but still love. It was a stand alone. Now it is a trilogy. It changed over from adult to na/ya coming of age with fantasy features (and some romance). It contains a male lead who won't define his sexuality but the history with boys as backstory I'm afraid--the main character is female and his history was added after she was set up. As far as triggers--therre's some past tense self harm mentioned and the main character has been in a relationship with someone much too old for her, but again, that is mostly past tense. Also, so drug use that eventually 9though not so much in the first book, definitely becomes problematic. That's all I ca. think of that might bug people. There is swearing. They are kids. It happens.

Here is a very rough synopsis.

Michelle Lerner | 6 comments I'm looking for one more beta reader for a humorous memoir-in-essays about interesting animals I've lived with. It's my second book (first already trad published to good reviews) but a different genre (last was a novel). I'm a Harvard-trained lawyer who got the animal law program started at Harvard Law School and practiced animal law for years, and this is a mostly humorous inside look at the animals who have inspired me in my own life and what animals can be like if you give them the leeway to be themselves, and it has some educational/policy discussion woven in. 86k words. Please message me here or email me at michellelerner.net@gmail.com if interested.
