Hi

World Cat (our preferred source for confirming page counts) Has this one at 185 pages. Can you tell me what is on pages 186-208? Some things we count & some things we don't.

Ben | 50 comments There are a couple of blank pages, followed by a page describing the contents of the included cd-rom and it’s system requirements

I don't think we would count the stuff about the CD. 185 pages it is.

Done. Please allow 20 minutes for the changes to display (much) longer if you are using the app.

To help volunteer librarians please add [done] or similar to the thread title. This is only possible in the desktop view.

Ben | 50 comments There are also 18 pages of introductory material, table of contents, etc that is not accounted for.

I don’t know why the cdrom contents wouldn’t be counted either. If I read it, it should be counted toward my pages read count, shouldn’t it?

We do have a Librarians Manual that volunteer librarians are required to follow. This clearly states that introductory material is not counted - & I have been around long enough to remember the founder of Goodreads stating that he didn't want librarians to have to do mathematical sums to enter page counts.

In your other thread you state that the page counts we count stop at the numbered pages. This is incorrect. For some reason a lot of publishers have the last page as unnumbered. World cat doesn't count that page but Goodreads does. About the author pages are frequently unnumbered.

My opinion is that the CD is auxilliary added to the book, so it's instructions shouldn't be counted. Another librarian may like to weigh in. Just in case the consensus is it should be added please count the pages past 185 accurately. I'm guessing it would be 188 pages, but you haven't made that clear.

Agreed.

There are 18 pages from the first printed page with the title until the first page numbered "1". The table of contents begins on Roman numeral v, and goes through xi. The Preface begins on xiii and goes through xvii. There is one blank page (just one side, not both front and back), before the main book begins on page "1".

At the end, the last page of the index is 185. There are 4 blank pages, then the "About the CD" page.

Therefore, I count 18 + 185 + 5 = 208.

If you want to exclude the About the CD page, which is printed and something a person could read, then 18 + 185 might make sense, 203, which I think is what it was before. Could we at least set it back to that?

The primary goal here is to accurately reflect pages read in the statistics.

Thank you for your consideration!

Hi Ben

Have you read the link I posted in message #6? Librarians are required to follow Goodreads policy or risk losing their librarian status.

I know you want every page in the book counted but we also get members who don't think the indexes at the back, etc should be counted as they don't read them & think it distorts their page count stats. It is impossible to please everyone I'm afraid.

Volunteer librarians cannot make a change in policy. If you would like a change please post a suggestion in Help.

I googled & there are believed to be 3.5 billion books on Goodreads. The change you are proposing is massive & certainly not something I would be interested in helping with as an unpaid volunteer.

I'm leaving this thread now - have a good day! :)
