I love them , I Hope This Doesn't Find You is a really good book that uses the trope

I do love it, I really do, but some books these days are just slapping on ‘enemies to lovers’ trope on it so readers will come running because it’s a popular and very loved trope, but in reality most enemies to lovers have no depth, either spend too long on the rivalry or get together too fast, or just don’t do it quite right. Really, there’s no such thing as a ‘bad’ trope because it can always be done well, but the people who write it are not so great at writing it :(

that was rivals to lovers, not enemies to lovers. i loved that book but it is a big difference!

i think your proper enemies to lovers would be The Cruel Prince because he really hated her guts as did she and they didn’t even “get together” till the second book.

THIS. i loooove enemies to lovers but i've read so many shitty enemies to lovers. good enemies to lovers is a slow-burn, where they actually HATE each other, not just a mild disliking with horniness underneath. you can't just slap the label "enemies to lovers" on a book with romance and call it a day. for example, everyone hails dance of thieves as an amazing enemies to lovers but imo it was more of a betrayal trope. they never actually hated each other and they got together within less than 100 pages. that's not enemies to lovers.
