Nathan | 2 comments sci fi novel about space trees that show up to a planet and drop fruit, then leave atmosphere. I remember there were humans that ended up on a ship attached to a tree as it left. not the Integral Trees. Would have read in the 80s or early 90s.

Was the book for kids, teens, or adults?

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments I know you've ruled out Larry Niven's The Integral Trees but he has another series (Known Space) which might fit. I read an article that says: "Larry Niven’s Known Space series gives us the Stage Trees. Essentially these are plants that are genetically engineered to be solid-fuel rockets. Beginning their lives as “stage bushes,” when ignited they will blast off and send seeds blowing in every direction! If the stage tree gets to its much larger life cycle it becomes a multi-stage rocket nearly half a mile tall. These rockets will eventually blast off and spread their seeds onto distant worlds capable of supporting life."
