Children's Chapter Book with characters that personify things like similes, etc. Read late 1990s/early 2000s.

I don't have much info about the plot other than what's in the title, unfortunately. A friend asked for help finding a book she'd read as a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s. She thinks it was fairly new at the time. It was a chapter book. She remembers that the two main characters were kids, possibly a boy and a girl, who somehow found themselves in a place where they met characters who personified literary concepts like similes, metaphors, onomatopoeias, etc. All my searches have brought up are picture books and kids nonfiction about grammar and literary devices so far. Any help would be appreciated.

Not late 90s, the main character is a boy (joined by new friends along the way, but not a girl): however, The Phantom Tollbooth is a chapter book where he meets characters who personify literary concepts. Could your friend be mis-remembering that book?
