Read this in middle school (2009) but it was already old. Biggest thing I remember is the team’s robot assistant pushing a crevasse in the earth apart while other characters are falling in.

Was there was a particular main character? Male or female? Age?
Late teens early 20’s I believe, male main character with a scientist side character and a few companions. The robot is on the left side of the cover, and they meet a group of subterranean creatures near the earths core who are friendly.
I know you mentioned it was old when you read it. Like '80s or '90s, or possibly older?
