Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I love it when the guys get all crafty-tech... "makin' a sweet-ass amp inside a Filco frame... and put some kickin' scrapbook decals on it." heeheehee

Sorry, just got a funny visual from all that. ;)

The fact that Kevin quotes old school rap on this board makes me feel better about the world.

I think Wild Wild West was also a terribly remade movie starring Will Smith.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I would toss in ten dollars for a Youtube clip of Kevin singing a Big Daddy Kane song. Who's with me?

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Oh, me, me!!! *frantically waves hand*

Although, I had a wicked crush on Tone Loc when he sang Funky Cold Medina. I could see Kev singing that one with style!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments So, he's agitating for more historical fiction-y steampunk, less fantasy? What's the fun of THAT?

message 76: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments It is an odd criticism. Every genre starts out small and expands. Steampunk was already half-way between sci-fi and fantasy anyway so why not set it more on the fantasy side if an author has a great idea.

I do see Steampunk kind of being overrun now though. Two or three years ago, I had one friend who told me what Steampunk was; I'd never heard of it before. This year at the San Diego Comic Con, Steampunk seemed to be one of the most popular costumes. I, personally, would like to see more of it set in an alternate historical Victorian era. But that is just because I love the Victorian era anyway. I'm very drawn toward books and movies set in that era.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) How did I miss this thread? Those pictures are great!

message 78: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments Bun, I think most people who are making Steampunk trendy (at least in the Geek world I live in) would not get that side of the genre. This guy obviously doesn't get it either. I didn't get that either but I am notoriously oblivious to metaphor in literature. :-)

message 79: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I agree, Bun. Do your research and then your criticism can be taken seriously.

message 80: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments That is better. And it is just what I was saying about the genre being overrun. It happened with the whole fiction about a mysterious author/book/manuscript. There were some great ones but now every time I see a new book like that I am immediately turned off because I've read too much of the crap. The same with the whole supernatural retellings of classic novels. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies had a great premise but now look at the others that have come out. The gems will still be published in all those genres but with such saturation they will get buried with the crap.

message 85: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Zen, the author is Gail Carriger, and the series is pretty good. For grittier steampunk, I really love Boneshaker, Clementine and Dreadnought by Cherie Priest.

message 90: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Search google images for steampunk.

message 91: by Jammies (new)

Jammies RA, the short definition of steampunk is a society with steam-powered machines and either magic or science-fiction elements. The Cherie Priest books I listed are her "Clockwork Century" books, which take place in the late nineteenth century US, where steam technology has evolved in part because the Civil War has been going on for decades.

Sally, I keep trying to figure out the connection, and since I can't find one, I have decided your mind is a beautiful and unusual thing.

Jammies Stacia, I have the robot necklace and get compliments on it all the time!

Janine, you should get one.

Zen, I loved the characters and the plotlines, so we must have different tastes.

Sally, that'll teach you.

RA, I just get random GR ads.
