The best book I read in August (2024)

The calendar page has turned, but before we put August entirely behind us, let's shout out. What were your favorite middle grade reads last month?

My reading was a real hodge-podge, pulling from different styles and genres. I finally got around to Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan, who has become one of my favorite authors. I also know I'll get an easy, fun read from Gordon Korman. This month, I nabbed Slugfest, which puts a star athlete into remedial gym class. The Ice House by Monica Sherwood puts a new twist on our pandemic experiences, and I picked up the first book in a trilogy of art-themed mysteries by Deron Hicks. The Van Gogh Deception is the perfect blend of art, history, and action. Adding this one to my Series Challenge. Also notable (since I adore survival stories) is a novel-in-verse by Dusti Bowling. The Canyon's Edge sends a father & daughter into the desert, where things go terribly wrong, with parallels to their shared grief in the aftermath of a shooting.

I just love middle grade "horror" and this is the time of year the new ones are released. I really enjoyed The Lonely Below and It Happened to Anna. If you (or your kids/students) like this genre, definitely pick up one of these.
