Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I have read both these with this group, so it will give me time to catch up with my other books. So good news all round!

Yes, Sayers has been a group challenge. I've never clicked with Tey to be honest, but I know she is very popular. I liked the one she wrote set in a school, but that was about it.

I’ve never really tried Tey - except for The Daughter of Time, which through group challenges, I’ve somehow read three times! Oh, and after the last time, I finally read my used copy of The Franchise Affair, and really enjoyed it.

I wanted to fill in the background, read the other Grant books to know more about the characters. Plus, I had picked up several used paperbacks over the years, and they’ve been glaring at me reproachfully from my bookshelf for many years!

Oh, I really didn't like The Daughter of Time. I know I am in the minority but you can't tell someone's character from a portrait of them, when portraits of kings were made to present them at their best. Hans Holbein anyone? I couldn't suspend disbelief for that one, sorry.

Me, either - not just that, but because it was #5 in the series, and I didn’t really know him, his background, or any of the characters visiting him in hospital, felt like walking in the middle of a film. Yes, I’m one of the “read a series from the beginning” folk!

Plus, I hadn’t read a lot of War of the Roses history, didn’t know much about Richard. I did read up on him, which helped, and discovered the incredible narration by Derek Jacobi, which gave so much depth to the characters, and conveyed the humor. I also determined to read the earlier books in the Grant series! So far, I’ve read the first…so this will jumpstart another personal reading goal.
