Situational morality? Hmm

---In philosophy, it's ethics that allows for varying one's answer/s to ethical conundrums (say, for instance, "Is it acceptable to bomb civilians in an enemy nation?") in accord with the circumstances/facts/scope/characters of the particular situation. One might answer, for instance, "Maybe try offering terms, or even an ultimatum, first?" or, for example, "Only if you know that enemy will otherwise do severe harm [or even: at least as severe harm] to you" or other qualifying/delimiting phrase/conditions.-- The answer, that is, requires having knowledge of the situation and taking the situation (plus one's more general universe of ethics answers) into account in answering the etchics question.
---Since you asked.---

Thank you, Paula, for that in depth and eloquent dissertation.

Paula | 1088 comments Tom: yw; or you had in view some other meaning for that signifier, lol?

message 6: by Tom (new)

Tom Olbert | 1445 comments Who knows? It's a sufficiently broad theme, I hope.

Carrie Zylka (carriezylka) | 286 comments Well alrighty then.
HOA Karen's in space it is ..... ;)

Justin Sewall | 1244 comments My story this month may be semi-autobiographical. I do work for Boeing... at least for three weeks out of every month from here until the strike ends.

message 9: by Tom (new)

Tom Olbert | 1445 comments An intriguing vision of the future, Justin. Good build-up of suspense and a wrenching conclusion.

(I hope you don't have as hard a time as that.)

message 10: by Justin (new)

Justin Sewall | 1244 comments Just the furlough time. :(

Over camping in Montauk. Bit of a deadzone, so if anyone wants to close out the stories thread in the morning. Feel free to. Will read the stories on Tuesday.

Tom Olbert | 1445 comments Interesting story, Jot. Well imagined set-up and well paced.

'Hope you're enjoying Montauk.

Just posted Times Up! message. Enjoy your vacation!

Justin Sewall | 1244 comments What a very interesting crop of stories this month! There is a strangeness to them all that reflects this strange month for me.

I've dropped two sons off at college, and the house feels weird with only 4 out of 6 kids at home, and now the Boeing strike and my impending furlough in Oct. I feel like I'm in a bit of a Twilight Zone episode.

Happy Autumn everyone!

Justin

Happy Autumn...

An Autumn that lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge...an Autumn of both shadow and substance...
