The book was based on real events. An American boy in the late 1700s or early 1800s joined up as a crew member on a ship. The captain was abusive and after he severely injured the boy, the boy, along with a friend, deserted and hid in Siberia for the winter. A local medicine man helped heal the boy's ribs. Eventually, the boys found another ship and learned his father had reported him missing. The captain was apparently disciplined for his conduct.
