Tell us the last book (of any kind) that you recommended to someone else (who actually read your recommendation) and did they like it? Was your recommendation a blanket boosting of said book or tailored to that particular reader?

Robert | 524 comments Leonard and hungry Paul by Rónán Hession. It’s my go to rec when people want to get out of a slump or haven’t read a book for a long time.

Lesley Aird | 128 comments Quite a few of my real life friends have started to read less as the years pass & streaming choice & availability increases.
Of those that do read, a significant number read almost exclusively within a genre - particularly crime and/or sci-fi.
If I recommend a book it is usually because someone has to come to mind as I’ve read it myself. Most recently, I recommended A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves to two different friends. They both loved their book.
It’s not often that I read something that I have a strong desire to have a dynamic discussion about. However, Chouette has been on my mind since I read it a year or so ago. I did try to talk about it with one friend but it just strengthened her view that I am ‘weird’. After some consideration I identified another friend I thought would appreciate it. I ordered it for delivery to her last week & am looking forward to hearing her views.

I've get a pretty good batting average when it comes to recommending books to specific people. I do usually tailer my recommendations to specific people based on their tastes and interests. The most recent three I recall were all hits.

Better the Blood. For a friend who likes crime fiction and books involving historical and social justice issues.

Spill Simmer Falter Wither. For a friend who adopted a one-eyed dog with aggression issues.

Assembly. For a friend with a deep interest in intersectional feminism and racial issues.

I recommended Elena Knows (Claudia Piñeiro) to a neighborhood friend whose reading tastes I'm semi-familiar with (she asked for recs on Facebook and got a ton). She did not finish it because it was "too close to home" (I think the health issues in the book were too similar to ones she had experienced). Topic-wise and politically, this would have been a book right up her alley. She asked for a second round of recommendations online and I still don't know if she got any she read and enjoyed...

It was one of our group reads in the wayback. It's excellent, here's a link to the old discussion threads if you're interested. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
