Well I don't think so. I do like reading sad books but only if they have an actualy plot and an actual reason to be sad
and a sad fantasy? that's liking combining two good things together (again, only if the sad part is actually worth it!)
I feel like fantasy is a loved genre obviously and if you make it sad and add more emotion in it, readers would honestly eat that up. also, books with sad aspects to them stick to the readers longer and causing them to give higher ratings because not all books portray emotion!I'll read it honestly

Sometimes I buy books with the expectation that they will make me cry. Sometimes you just need a good book that will make you cry.

May I suggest the Lotus War trilogy by Jay Kristoff. It's a Japanese steampunk fantasy that had me going through many emotions including a few tears.
