I enjoyed this one more than the previous book. Arnold's sudden death was a real shock and ratcheted up the tension and suspense. Gonzo is rapidly becoming my favorite character.
I have mixed feelings about this story. I liked that Sam was having a hard time getting back to work and needed to talk to someone about it. It showed she isn't superwoman. Arnold's murder was a total surprise to me. I didn't see it coming. I agree with Lauren, it did ratchet up the tension in this story. I couldn't put the book down at that point. I absolutely hated that the cops are allowed to beat someone in a cell and only get a short suspension. Or get away with it completely like Sam did.

Right and wrong does not change just because the act is committed by a "good guy".
I agree with you about beating a prisoner. The punishment doesn't fit in this case. However, a cop shouldn't tell another cop (or anyone for that matter) that s/he deserved to be tortured. He needed a good punch in my opinion. Ramsey is in the Special Victims Unit. How will help victims. He should know better. It seems like the bad cops are all around this place.
The more I think about this book and the series in general. I don't think Force did any research on life in politics or police policies and procedures.
Sharon wrote: "The more I think about this book and the series in general. I don't think Force did any research on life in politics or police policies and procedures."Totally!
Her depictions of police procedure and political nuance are completely devoid of any basis in common sense or fact.
I'm still ambivalent about this series. I hate how Force plays is loose with things we know just wouldn't happen: second lady still being a cop and without Secret Service protection, police brutality. But she is an excellent writer, so I keep reading.I thought Arnold's murder and its' aftermath was realistically portrayed and heart wrenching. But the hunt for his murderer was overshadowed by that, the inauguration stuff and Sam working through her return. Just a lot of stuff happening in this one.
