I would have read this in the 1980s. I can't remember if it was filed under J or YA. MG wasn't a thing at the time. If memory serves, the character's name was Jonathan. He's an artist and he's now living with his father and not enjoying himself. He steps through a door and finds himself in a different time. There's a girl named Helen who is several years his junior. Back in his own time, he decides to sketch her. When he finishes the sketch, he bricks it up in the wall. She finds it in the future and that's when her parents tell her that Jonathan was her (great?) grandfather who died before she was born. She wonders how he could possibly have sketched her.

I thought the title was something like Door into Time or Steps in Time or Door into Tomorrow, but Google has failed me.
