Longtime PDJ fan here. Read all books twice. Now what? She's gone and I don't know who to read that compares! A bookshop clerk steered me toward Ruth Rendell. Read two books, and...just not for me. Who out there do you find similarly intelligently written? Could be either a contemporary or period setting. (Word of warning:, I do not enjoy cute, plucky protagonists.) Thanks for any recommendations!

Looked him up. Guess I should start with 'Down Cemetery Rd'? (Also a TV show with Emma Thompson! Love Emma.)
That's right. Looking forward to the tv adaptation. And of course his 'Slow Horses' series is terrific, an antidote to James Bond et al.
No one compares to PDJ, but perhaps try Susan Hill's series with Detective Simon Serralier or Deborah Crombie's series with Duncan Kinkaid or Elizabeth George's series with Detective Lynley.
Have you tried Ann Cleves? Her Vera Stanhope series and her Shetland series are both excellent. You can also check out Anthony Horowitz.
Jeanne, Lynne, Thomas - Thanks for these recommendations! I'm currently reading the latest Anthony Horowitz, who was already on my radar because of the excellent 'Foyle's War'. I still watch it, as many of the plots are complex enough that I've forget the details. Enjoying this book enough to delve into more AH. And will look into these others.
