This is such a sad story. Marilyn wants to be a doctor. Her mother wants her to go to college to meet a man. James is the son of Chinese parents who were the cook and janitor at an elite boarding school. They meet at Harvard and together form a dysfunctional family of five. The central point of the book is the death of their teenage daughter, an event that would have been devastating for any family. Ng tells us so much about this family, how they didn't talk, all the secrets, how unhappy each of them is and so much more. But at the same time, she tells us not much at all about this family. Very intriguing story telling. But it's so very sad.
Read for the steeplechase challenge, Historical Fiction tag. (It's weird to read something tagged historical fiction that takes place when I was a teenager myself...just saying.)
