Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments This will be my first 24h readathon! I've done sprints but nothing this big. I wish I could stay awake the entire 24h but alas, I had the suffering of chronic fatigue so I know I'll need to make up some time after the official end time. I'll do my best though.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments My books I've got planned, all of which I'm already reading:

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store (James McBride) - 69%
The Quiet You Carry (Nikki Barthelmess) - 55%
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (Suzanne Collins) - 62%
Ghosts of the Shadow Market (Cassandra Clare) - 21%
The Hero of Ages (Brandon Sanderson) - 16%
Rhythm of War (Brandon Sanderson) - 45%
Lockjaw (Matteo L. Cerilli) - 4%

Lockjaw is the only audiobook, which I'll use if I need to lay down for a bit to rest. The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is a digital read for a bookclub I'm in. The rest are physical books. I am going to focus heavily on Rhythm of War so I can get it finished before Brandon starts to release the chapters for the next book in a few days.

But I'm a fast reader so I'll likely finish all of these, with the exception of Lockjaw if I do get around to that one.

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Looks like you’re all set to go Reuben!
I never go for the full 24 hours as sleep is way too important to me.

Happy reading!

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments First hour update -

Finished The Quiet You Carry (read 159 pages)
Continued The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (read 79 pages)

Energy levels are still high, snacks have significantly lowered via consumption, had a stop by from my cat who mostly ignored me. It's warm outside 16c/60f despite being winter?? What's going on with that.

Enjoying myself so far! Will continue with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes until this chapter is finished, then I'll swap to another book.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Second hour update -

Last 8 pages to finish the The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes chapter I was reading.
Read 155 pages from Ghosts Of The Shadow Market.

Weather still nice, cat came once more to visit for a moment. Energy still high. Sister and nephew just stopped by at the top of the hour but they should leave me alone, which is nice. But I'm about to head inside for a moment for bathroom and leg stretching then I'll be back and will pick what to read next.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Third hour update -

84 pages from The Hero of Ages. The two Brandon Sanderson's I'm reading are a tad slower since I'm highlighting things as I go.

Weather still good, tiredness creeping in a tiny bit but I'm still good to stay out here reading until sunset in a few hours. I feel like I'm keeping a good pace, with 485 pages total read over three hours. (I'd estimated 100 pages an hour, so I'm well ahead, but I know the Sanderson's will slow me down).

Jamie | 412 comments You have some great books underway! And 100 pages an hour, and holding, is amazing after a few hours. I hope you continue to have a great readathon!

Thank you! I'm having a really great time. Hope you're doing great with yours, too.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Next hour update -

94 pages read for The Hero of Ages. Weather is starting to turn as the sun is beginning to lower, but I have another hour of full sunlight so I'll use that well before heading back inside. There IS a very loud plane flying in circles overhead which I hope stops soon.

I'll be switching back to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for this hour then I'll see where to go from there.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Next update -

I've finished The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (last 108 pages) and continued reading some of Ghosts Of The Shadow Market (51 pages).

Moved back inside because it's pretty close to sunset and was getting cold. This next few hours is my real test - having to read on my bed, tempted by sleep. I still feel quite awake but I know this is the challenging hours. I have to stay in here for ~5 hours until I can relocate into the living room once my family has gone to bed.

I'll be doing a good chunk of Rhythm of War now, I wanted to leave that for a bit so I can steadily read that for a few hours. It's one I'm highlighting so a little slower than my other books, but I hope I can feel satisfied with the progress.

Total count so far - 738 pages.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Next update -

I read 70 pages of Rhythm of War then took a short break to cook some soup. Listened to my audiobook of Lockjaw while I ate. Still awake but this is definitely the time of day I usually take a nap, so gonna push through and see how well I do. Difficult since my body acts like an infant - feed me and I wanna go to sleep immediately after.

Gonna continue with Rhythm of War for now.

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Update -

Read 31 pages of Rhythm of War before getting quite tired, so gave myself an hour off. Listened to my audiobook of Lockjaw though I napped for 15 minutes. Awake again now and about to have an energy drink to help through the next few hours.

My mother is still out watching the Olympics so I can't leave my bedroom yet, but I think I'm past the danger point of sleeping again, and she won't be up more than another hour. I'm back to reading another story in the Ghosts Of The Shadow Market since that requires the least energy right now.

message 15: by Ben (new)

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Halfway mark! 1037 pages read from my physical books and 38 pages from my audiobook. Doing okay so far, the short nap definitely helped though I know it won't sustain me through the rest of the time. I know I'll need proper sleep at some point but I'mma do my best.

I'm going to switch to my digital read for now, which is The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store.

message 16: by Ben (new)

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Finished The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and will be moving back to the Hero of Ages for a bit.

Wow you are on a roll Ben! Many of us when we start we want to read 24 hours. There is real fun in that. You roll on.

message 19: by Ben (new)

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Thank you both!

I finished Ghosts Of The Shadow Market and the eyes are starting to grow heavy, so I'm going to go take a nap for a couple of hours then get up and finish the rest later.

I've only got my two Brandon Sanderson's to go - 54% left of The Hero of Ages, and 42% left from Rhythm of War.

message 20: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Sleep is definitely very important. My readathon started off with 5 hours of sleep (and 1 more hour before the start of the readathon) so I'm hoping I'll manage without any further sleep… We will see...

message 21: by Ben (new)

Ben (linuswickworth) | 14 comments Learned a valuable lesson for next time I participate - when I decide it's sleep time (vs. a small nap), it's better just to commit to a longer sleep (5-6 hours) than assume I'll be fine after 2-3 hours. I won't be, I'll be exhausted and waking every 30 minutes to my alarm only extends my sleep hours haha.

But I'm going to try to fill in the ~8 hours I slept through.

message 22: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments I do set my alarm but let myself sleep 5-6 hours. Won't be well enough rested otherwise.

Hope you enjoyed your readathon nonetheless !
See you back in October hopefully!
