I did not expect that! But, I read a lot of translated works so this is a good one for me.
I also was not expecting this to be the winner, but am happy with it winning. There were a few I was worried about.
I’m pleasantly surprised too, but I guess I shouldn’t be. This group has always made me want to read more translated books.

I voted for it but did not think it would come out on top. I’m very happy it did.
A freebie for me (not being British or American, reading stuff in translation has always been a completely natural thing for me). I always find it curious that it is even prompt-worthy at all.I will probably make a point reading a book translated from a language I really don't know, so I couldn't read the original even if I tried.
Oh, I just realized... the way the prompt is worded, it doesn't even have to be a translation, does it? I read in three languages, so I could just use a German or Spanosh original?
Also did not expect this one to win, but am happy with it.

Yes, that's right. you could read a book in the original, or you could read a book originally written in Japanese, for example, in any of the languages you read.
Pretty sure I was neutral on this one. Maybe we have a silent majority of members who don't comment in the discussions but vote hard for prompts that no one is really talking about?

Based on the comments above, it seems like a lot of the regular commenters voted for this one, but there weren’t a lot of comments in general. The whole 2016 list was already “in” as its own prompt. We might find that there is less discussion of the all the anniversary lists in general. The OPs won’t be there to explain or promote their prompts. They won’t be a part of the Wild discussion. I suspect that only a small minority of the voters are active in the Wild Discussion. I think there are hundreds(?) of voters who don’t have time or feel the need to discuss their votes or ideas. I was active in the past, but it was really hard to follow last year if I wasn’t on all the time. Someone would say “I love that idea” but I couldn’t even figure out what idea they were talking about. (Plus I was migraining, so it hurt to read.) We need a place for chit chat, but sometimes it overwhelms the prompt discussion.
I can’t imagine that the silent voters vote together as a “block”, but they might be less likely to vote on our more “creative” ideas the first time they see them. They miss the experience of being there when a truly new idea starts to build a following. It’s fun when you feel like you were a part of it, and you are more likely to vote for something that you participated in.

I think “translated book” is an easy way to get more of us to read something that is truly “from” another country rather than simply set there. Since you regularly make that stretch, you could choose to relax with this one, or challenge yourself to read something from a new to you country.
I have been active in the Wild Discussion in the past but this year I haven't been able to dedicate the time to keep up. I've posted maybe once or twice in there. I do read and sometimes post in the voting threads though, and wait a few days to make my decisions based on discussion.I for sure think there are people who just vote without reading any of it though.
Happy with this result. I think it allows for a stretch (for most people in ATY52 anyway - those of us whose native language is not English likely already do this frequently/always), but still WIDE open for any kind of book at the same time.

This was one of my downvotes. It's a prompt that I find very overdone after doing so many challenges, and I'm really not that interested in doing it again. If there's a translated book I want to read, I'd just fit it in somewhere, I don't need a prompt to push me to.
Since the prompt is not specified as a book in translation, I may challenge myself to read a book in Spanish.
Lol! I could just read a book in my own language then. However I frequently do read translated books from several languages, not only English.

I try to participate in the wild discussion but life frequently gets in the way. Totally missed the multi week suggestion and voting and this current time’s suggestion
