Not really. It's how we progress in many videogames. What sucks in those is missing a save or running out of lives.
Huh. I thought I posted hear earlier! At any rate I read this and the sequel in quick succession last summer and really liked them a lot.
I’m looking g forward to the discussion.
I started listening to this today on a couple hour car drive. I'm enjoying the energy so far and the voice of the MC. The audio production has some nice elements. So far (~30%, into chapter 7), some background still being filled in but also (hopefully) building up to some fast-paced and confusing action.

I'm about 20% in and so far I'm not very interested in any of the characters or in what happens to them. I'm hoping that will change. Soon.

Yep, you did post. In the the Final thoughts thread :)
I've listened to the first two chapters and am interested to see where this will go!@Ori: I hadn't thought about Scalzi as a comparison, but now that you've said it: yeah!
Hi. New in the group. I just started today and I am 20% in with this book. Quite interesting so far.
Scalzi was one of the first authors I thought about. I also get some Andy Weir vibes. It's similar type of humour that's suffusing the narration despite fairly high stakes (you know, the whole dying thing).
@divadiane I agree with the MURDERBOT vibes. Also, is everyone aware that this book has been made into a major motion picture directed by Oscar-winner (Parasite) Bong Joon-ho set for a January 2025 release?https://m.imdb.com/title/tt12299608/
I’m 34% in and so far it has been a pleasant and easy listen with a mix of Scalzi and Weir (the good parts) vibes. Looking forward to finding out how they get out of their predicament. The only thing that was a bit off for me was when (view spoiler)
It's tangents all the way. I guess it's fine, but maybe it would have felt more natural as alternating chapters of present and past...?
I haven't read the book so I don't know how spoilery the tagged bit is, but a reminder that people reading this thread on the Android app are forced to see tagged spoilers, and that is why we ask that this thread is truly spoiler free, instead of using tagged spoilers.

It’s almost not spoilery at all imo, I just wanted to be extra safe.
I didn't find the tangents distracting; they were necessary explanations of what was happening in the storyline. However, the side stories did slide into the narration without the suggested chapter separations.
Pharmacdon, sounds like you're ready to join the spoiler thread! You should go that way so we can chat more fully :)
Humor's a tough one - so easy to be offputting if the vibe doesn't match up with the reader. We're listening to this one in the car and we're bickering with it almost as much as the characters are bickering with each other. The details of that will go in the spoiler thread later.
Ok, this is a very fast read. I’ve just started and I’m suddenly 64% in. I’ll join you in spoilers thread when I’m finished, because my first thoughts are not so first, I guess.
