Chris | 4 comments I read this book sometime in the 1990s. The plot involves a school located on a space station and top students competing for #1 graduate. The protagonist crashes his space ship just before graduation and is terribly injured. He is sent back to him home planet to recover. During the voyage he travels at near light-speed and is affected by time shifted relativity.

He believes another student sabotaged his ship and decides to return to the school and seek revenge. When he arrives back at the school only a short time passed for him, but the other student has aged by decades and is now the administrator of the school. The protagonist hides his true identity and pretends to be a new student while he plans his revenge.

He attempts to kill the administrator but is found out and is incapacitated by a sonic weapon. He is put in confinement but later he escapes and has a final battle in a zero gravity glass maze where he kills his rival.

I think the main character is called McLeod or McCloud, but I'm not sure. Also I believe there is a female student who befriends him and helps. There is also discussion about travel near the speed of light and relativity and time.

Chris | 4 comments Unfortunately that's not it, but it's really close. The book setting was at an academy for future star pilots. But the plot definitely revolved around a sabotaged spaceship crash and return for revenge. The most unique plot element being the age difference between the two former classmates during the final confrontation (since the protagonist had spent time traveling at near light speed)

Rainbowheart | 28672 comments When in the '90s did you read it, could it have been as late as 1999?

Did it seem like a newish book at the time, or an older one?

Chris | 4 comments It's possible it was 1999, but I really thought I read it between 1990-1995. I'm guessing it was published sometime after 1980, but not 100% sure. It did have the feel of a 1980s-1990s YA sci-fi. I remember that it was a paperback.

Rainbowheart | 28672 comments Does anything on the 20th Century YA and Middle Grade Science Fiction list look familiar?
