1984 question

19841984In the book "1984" Big Brother controls everyone and everything. If a citizen were to go against Big Brothers beliefs physically or consciously they would be executed. the controlment is so extreme that many people lose their self consciousness. Do you believe that this could happen to this extreme in the real world?
