He glanced about the corridor, peering for his caller. Movement. Are my eyes true? “Ganis! Assassin!”
Ganis laughed, his face contorted by deep scars. He pointed a crossbow and fired.
The dart bounced from Gyrfalcon’s armor as he drew his sword. “Guards to me!”
Ganis threw the empty crossbow at the knight’s face, turned, and ran.
The keep roused into a confused uproar as Gyrfalcon sprinted after his quarry. He remembers our last duel. He won’t face me a second time.
The evil count fled downwards, breathing heavily. He was barely ahead as the men raced through a barren stone corridor. A door yawned ajar at the far end.
I have him! exulted Gyrfalcon.
Ganis reeled as he wrenched himself through the opening, slamming the barrier behind him.
Not good enough. Gyrfalcon’s breath whined in his throat like a hungry hound. He felt the merest prick on his hand as he yanked the door open. His legs turned leaden. Ganis’ back wavered strangely. The floor rushed before his face. So dark . . .
