This had one edition shelved four times and one shelved 41 times.
The one that was shelved four times had a truncated ISBN13 in the ISBN10 field, so it was the one that needed to be deleted.

I added the correct ISBN to the default edition, deleted the one with truncated ISBN and recombined correctly, all of which you could have done yourself.
