I read this book around 2005. It's about a fifth grade reading level.

I would guess that it was written mid/late 1900s because it had Box Car Children vibes. It was not futuristic like Hunger Games.

All adults over about 16 get an illness that causes them to pass away. There are only kids left over. (It doesn't dwell on the disease, just starts with the kids figuring out what to do). I remember there is mention of a Chicago suburb maybe Elmhurst or Villa Park. The group of kids have to figure out how to survive and do jobs and form a community. They are different ages.

I remember they mention the train tracks and maybe hid in a shed or a barn at some point.
