I remember being read this book in 2009 or 2010, when I was in 5th grade. My homeroom teacher read it to us.

The book's title was a single word, I believe, which I can't remember. The cover was mostly black with I believe a ripple and a teardrop, or raindrop? Alternatively, the cover was a street covered in rainfall. I'm not sure.

The book's four protagonists were two guys and two girls. One of the girls could shapeshift into any animal she thought of, and one of the guys (the future supervillain) was able to read and influence minds. I believe the other guy was super strong, but I'm not sure.

The shapeshifting girl and the super strong guy were formerly dating by the beginning of the story, but that had changed for reasons I don't remember. I believe the mind reader was involved, because the group had had a falling out at that point due to the mind reader misusing his abilities on his friends. The book centers around the group's adult selves training them to fight the mind reader in the future, as well as the group attempting to mend their friendships, including by reaching out to the mind reader, despite the fact he is kind of unpleasant.

SPOILERS— I remember the mind reader having an abusive home life. The climax of the novel had the mind reader's future self discovering the other three's ploy and interfering, leading to the teen selves jumping to the future to face him even though they weren't ready. I believe there was a confrontation where the teens were severely outclassed, but they appealed to the mind reader's humanity and found a nonviolent solution.
