I don't remember much about the book but that it was an orphan with a necklace of a specific shape. This necklace wound up being magical I believe, and for some reason rain is sticking out to me as an important factor in the story. The cover was dark with 3D "rain" droplets on it. Thanks in advance!

The title story from A Necklace of Raindrops and Other Stories by Joan Aiken? It's not YA though - it's a middle grade short story, so probably not the one.
