We have a regular who hit me with an I-don't-know-the-title-or-author question. He said he thinks it's around fifteen years old, but when I showed him some William Sleator books he said it looked like that, but that wasn't it, so I'm thinking it's older than fifteen years.

He's pretty sure it's YA. The protagonist is a male. The book starts with the protagonist growing up with orphans on a spaceship. He discovers he can hear and talk to the spaceship. He can jump into computers and programs. He thought the protagonist was part of an ancient order of cyber-jumpers.
