Fantasy series about a curse that gets passed down to the next generation to run away. Read late 1990s/early 2000s.

Help! Every time I get an itch to finish reading something I never finished, I keep thinking about this series but can never remember the name or author. I picked up the first novel in early 2000s (maybe late late 1990s).
Protagonist is cursed to run away or go crazy. At the end of each novel, the protagonist is killed and the curse passed on to their only daughter. I can’t remember if the 1st novel covered two generations but each novel unravels some more mystery of the curse. I must have read 2-3 novels by mid 2000s but the next novel did not have a released date before it was forgotten when I moved cross country for grad school. Now that it has been over a couple of decades, I doubt I can remember on my own so any help is much appreciated.
