Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments I think by teaching people (but especially females) to avoid rape, we are instilling more of a fear culture. It's a horrible thing, I won't deny that, but "Avoiding rape" makes it sound like potential rapists are around every corner, wherever you look; and you must simply avoid it at all costs.

Teach people about the ideas and concepts behind the act of rape, instead. They are ugly as can be. Teach people that raping someone is one of THE WORST sexual crimes that can be committed against anyone - it is NOT funny, it is NOT to be done "just for kicks". Make rape a truly PUNISHABLE, criminal offense, with clear parameters. Teach people to respect each other, and really communicate; and then maybe, stopping acts of rape completely will become a reality.

Candace Blevins (candaceblevins) | 7 comments Realistically? Women need to think safe, which means avoiding particularly dangerous situations. This doesn't mean sitting home afraid, it just means sometimes you take a cab instead of walking alone at night.

Ideally, we could just wave a magic wand and make it go away, but since that isn't happening, think smart, learn some self defense, and decide what kind of weapon you're comfortable being responsible for -- and then spend the time it takes to become proficient with it. Don't depend on others to rescue you, because if someone who could rescue you was around, the rapist likely wouldn't make his move in the first place.

In the meantime -- YES, keep up with education and prosecution, so men learn it isn't acceptable. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't think safe.

I'm not afraid because I know I can take care of myself if someone comes after me. It isn't about fear, it's about owning my power, and about being self-sufficient.

Sumana Dey | 2 comments If it's a choice, then of course we need to stop it. Safety plays an important part, just like we care for our safety from burglery or homicide....but we also teach our kids that they are bad things. Sadly, I don't see people tell their kids the same thing about sexual crimes. It's high time we sensitise the children at young age.

BADASSBOOKWORM (bookwormbadass) | 32 comments We need to STOP it. It is not okay that everytime you see a man or a teacher you think "Okay this guy could be a rapist so I'll shouldn't be alone with him.",
