SOLVED. YA Adventure book where orphans are adopted by a rich man but he is a recluse. [s]

The book I am thinking about is part of a series. In this series the orphans are adopted and one of the most clear scenes I can remember is where the kids go to save the man from an island and they find him with a broken leg in a hole. the other scene that i can think of is that the rich man has tattoos in three different languages that say "Tell blank I'm sorry". The blank is the name of the housekeeper. Thank you.

Roughly what year did you read this? Were the orphans all related to each other (i.e. a set of siblings), or did he adopt a group of random different orphans? What was the general theme / tone of the books - were they adventure stories?

I read the series about a year or two ago. The orphans had nothing in common except that they were all adopted by this recluse. It was an adventure book.
