Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments Anyone taking a book challenge in 2015. The concept is easy All you have to do is read 52 books in 52 weeks. One book per week. No size barriers. You can make it interesting by selecting different categories and read one from each. Categories can be fantasy, romance, horror, fiction, non-fiction, a dead writer, a banned book, graphic novel etc.. Its pretty fun. You can start anytime and continue for the next 52 weeks. So far I have finished 24 books and 11 books ahead of the target.

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments I didn't know the challenge was limited to 52 books (assuming we're talking about the same thing).

message 3: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments i guess i assumed that and the challenge that goodreads offer shows a target of 52 books. what makes a good chalenge? the right number?

message 4: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments 52 is a logical number, I guess. mines above 200, but that's because I read a combination of novels, novellas and graphic novels.

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments 200 is a big number. Hope you will be able to achieve that. I have decided not to include GN in my challenge. it would make reaching 52 too easy. however i kind of cheated by choosing books with smaller page no e.g. farenheit 451 metamorphosis etc. any recommendation on good GNs or books?

message 6: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Depends on the genres and languages you prefer. What's your favourite genres?

message 7: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Yeah, my initial was around 50, but then I realized that in case of GNs it was becoming too easy.
I wouldn't call that cheating, really. In the end, it's all about reading a good book, having a good time and appreciating the author, right?

message 8: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments true. I am kind of indifferent to any genres. with me its about liking the style of the writer. If I manage to finish one book by the author I try to go through everything by him. Currently I am going through Kazuo Ishiguro. Ironically he is genre-breaker. Last book he wrote was a fantasy but it was really about memories. he wrote never let me go which is basically a science fiction, but if you hv read the book or seenn the movie, then you know that it was so much more than that. Another writer i am liking a lot is Murakami and if you ask i wont be able to define his genre. A genre that i really want to get in to is true crime, have read truman capote's in cold blood and next in line is helter skelter. what do u like?

message 9: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments I personally prefer Science Fictions to other genres. The classic one are my favourites. But like you said, often it's the author's writing and prose that captivates more than the genre itself.
I haven't read their works. I do plan to read the works of a variety of authors, in both Bangla and English.

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments I also like sci fi specially the earlier works by muhammad jafar iqbal and still buy his newer stuffs habitually. his last work wasn't that good though. i am also looking forward to read ubik by philip k dick. saw that book in time magazines list of top 100 fiction.

message 11: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments I was very disappointed with his Serena.
Otherwise, I'm a big fan of Isaac Asimov and Orson Scott Card.
Guess I'll have to give Ubik a try.
Another one to keep a lookout for is Ancillary Justice. Won the Hugo award for 2014. I forgot the author's name, though.

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Another author I've been recently following is Ronel van Tonder. Her debut novel came out last year, and she's good, though a bit underrated in my opinion.
Do you read fantasies? I also like that genre, but haven't read much.

message 13: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments i also love assimov but haven't read orson scot. wil check them out. good suggestions. thanks

message 14: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Anytime. Though I have to stress that Orson Scott Card's works are classics. You don't know what you're missing!

Mehek Chowdhury | 2 comments :S Am I the only idiot who had bid 20 books, yet is still doubtful about completing the challenge??

message 17: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments i bid 52 and right now half way there. twenty books in 8 months wont be a very tough. great gatsby is like 140 pgs, Fahrenheit 451 isnt that big also.
to make my challenge more challenging i am currently reading helter skelter which is like 650 pgs plus. the book is so thrilling it never felt that big and now i am sad that it is almost over. best of luck!!

সালমান হক | 23 comments i bid 104 !!! :D

message 20: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Good luck to all of you.

message 21: by Mehek (new)

Mehek Chowdhury | 2 comments thank you. Well it sounds like you're a pro at reading . I , personally, am a slow reader. If I had your gusto and knack for reading, i would have bid 52 too :P

message 22: by Khaled (new)

Khaled (kseriousr) | 8 comments Books I read usually belong to a series so I am always motivated to go berserk for a while. Then again, I am too lazy to pick up new ones so eventually it balances out.

I guess 20-30 would be a reasonable target. Like Salman bro, I too focus on authors; finished most of the major works of orson scott card in a week before I went cold. Now I'm in for Brandon Sanderson; I really loved his mistborn series. And he is a really good fantasy writer.

Brandon Sanderson, now that's one author I'm looking forward to reading.

Thank you too, though I wouldn't call myself a pro. I'm more of an 'in-the-moment' reader. Like Khaled Bhai, I find it easier to follow the continuity along the book series.

message 24: by Tahlil (new)

Tahlil Ahmed | 2 comments Well I have been going through some book series for couple of months now. They are average 800-900 pages per book. So this challenge is not for me :P

message 25: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments well u can convert the number of books to nunber of pages. so like reading 10000 pgs a year.

You can? Didn't know that.

message 27: by Ashek (new)

Ashek Haq (ashekhaq) | 12 comments y not!! at the end of the day the challenge is not the key thing. its just one way to give a boost to your reading habit.

message 28: by Salman (new)

Salman Titas (smtitas) | 49 comments Good point. The actual reward of the challenge is the encouragement.
