Mrs. Scary Ghost | 4 comments I believe smut is the same as porn so personally I consider it a sin. Do I read books with some spice? Yes- however Im not reading exclusively for the spice, so I dont feel I am sinning. For example, watching a movie with a sex scene is different than watching porn. Once you start picking books because its super smutty then thats when Id say you are sinning.

Bruna Galamba | 45 comments No! Nothing is a sin. We are in 2024, not in the middle ages.
Read all the smut you want. Watch all the porn you want. Eat all you want. Be greedy. "Sin" is an outdated notion.

You are not committing a crime. People only have a right to judge you if you commit a crime. "God", if he exists, only has a right to judge you if you commit a crime. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to pay for your sins with money and prayers and be forgiven by a priest. "Sin" was created so religions could profit of human nature.

Other people's opinions about you and what you read don't matter.

To me, no. It's a book that you enjoy. That's good.

message 9: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (brithebookbabe) | 59 comments I don't think it is. haha. but then again, i'm not really religious. How old are you? It may be morally wrong if you're younger than 18.

I don't really think about it either or but I'd say it's fair what you said, makes sense to me.

Lisa Goldstein | 125 comments Not IMHO. No reading itself is a sin.

message 14: by Violet (new)

Violet H | 5 comments I’d say the Bible implies a yes. It’s sinful. But for stuff like this that may be a little unclear, I just ask myself if I’d read it around Jesus. Would you read smut with Jesus in the room? Would you be proud if He peeked around on your bookshelf? Does it help you get closer to Him?

message 15: by Ju (new)

Ju | 3 comments If you are a Christian, I think yes.
But if you feel free to make up your own mind, I don't see reason for it to be.
Reading smut helps you liberate libido and function as a healthy human being, as well as taking you on a ride to a fantasy world with lots of sex scenes.
Of course, it's +18. If you're under that age, I would advise you to stop and wait until you're a bit older to keep exploring this topic.
Through reading Smut, you assimilate the perspective of both main characters, becoming more apt to perceive the power struggles they go through.
Also, it is a good way of reflecting over sexuality, something we don't get to do often by ourselves.

So, IMO, smut can be good food for thought. It will also help you getting more comfortable with your own sexuality and sexual desires. Getting to know what arousals yourself better is good, because then you can choose a partner that will fulfill your sexual desires.
Seeing the bad patterns of behaviours in obviously "wrong" couples will also strengthen your morals and it will become more and more obvious to you what you like and dislike.

It's a rich experience to have.

But everything out of proportion is not good. Thinking smut is a reflection of reality is not good, and becoming addicted can make you feel more isolated than satisfied.

Moderation is needed, since sexuality can be inebriating at so many times.

Diane Most Definitely NOT...read what you want to read...I read extreme horror...is that classed as sin?? If it is I don't really care. 🤗

good point!

message 20: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 | 3 comments If reading extreme horror is a sin and let's face it much of the time they have oodles of aberrant sex too---then I need to be packing a bag for the "Black Farm" or someplace just as unpleasant.
Diane made a great point. Read what you want. Go buy a Colleen Hoover bestseller and tell yourself it is because you like her ability to craft a thriller. There are disingenuous people everywhere you look. Escapism through reading is self defense if you ask me.

Julie | 1 comments If the Abrahamic deity cared about reading smut, there'd be a lot less begatting, daughters seducing their own dads, and dirty passages like Ezekiel 23:20.

But even if it were considered a sin, it's bizarre that anyone would seek moral guidance from book that considers cotton-poly blend a sin and worships a megalomaniac entity who drowned the entire world and ruined his most devoted followers life on a bet.

Read as smutty or unsmutty of books as you want.

message 24: by Eden (new)

Eden (edenhufford) | 8 comments Those “dirty” passages aren’t condoning such behavior. People tend to think the Bible endorses those behaviors, but it is just recording the history, not saying “do likewise”.

message 25: by Eden (new)

Eden (edenhufford) | 8 comments @Mrs. Scary Ghost I 100% agree with you

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan Stimmel (suzestimmel) | 29 comments Is the 50 shades of grey series considered smut? Because if so I read both sides of that trilogy and don’t feel guilty at all lol

message 27: by Eden (new)

Eden (edenhufford) | 8 comments It’s not necessarily about feeling guilty, it’s whether it is right or wrong. You don’t have to feel guilty about something to make it a sin.

message 29: by Marti (new)

Marti boys watch porn and god loves them, you can do whatever you want

message 30: by Eden (new)

Eden (edenhufford) | 8 comments God loves those people, but it doesn’t mean he wants you to just go and do that sin

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God sets rules FOR OUR GOOD, not just to keep us from having fun. And we should follow those rules out of a love for him.

message 31: by Marti (new)

Marti omg i was joking, I really don't care about god

message 32: by Ruthie (new)

Ruthie (ruthharding) | 1 comments I am concerned about the prevalence of porn in our young people's lives; really nasty degrading stuff which is easily available through a smart phone. Young men are expecting young women to perform in the same way in real life.

I recommend young women and men are encouraged to read some of the less-spicy romance as an antidote. The sort of thing written by Emily Henry, Ali Henderson and Alyssa Cole. Yes, there is sex, but it's all centred on the woman's experience, it is all consensual, its not degrading. It gives a far better model of what a healthy sexual experience could / should be, than the porn they are exposed to.

Baby Girl | 7 comments In my humble and my own opinion, reading smut is not a sin. It is entertaining, keeps life interesting, and hey, you are reading! Literacy is important regardless of content. So if it gets others to pick up a book and read, Bravo!
